Brief History of the 100 Thousand Dollar Bar
The “100 Thousand Dollar Bar,” originally known as the $100,000 Bar, is a candy bar with a history that began in 1964. Created by Nestlé, it was inspired by the era’s popular quiz shows like The Big Surprise and The $64,000 Question, which offered substantial cash prizes. The name was a clever marketing move, suggesting a luxurious, “rich” taste experience.
Made with caramel, crisped rice, and milk chocolate, its unique combination of chewy, crunchy, and smooth textures quickly won over fans.
In the mid-1980s, the candy bar was renamed “100 Grand”, likely for trademark purposes or to refresh the brand. Around the same time, in 1984, Nestlé redesigned it from a single piece into two smaller bars, adding more chocolate due to the increased surface area. Over the years, limited-edition flavors like dark chocolate and peanut were introduced, but the classic recipe remained the most popular.
The 100 Grand Bar also gained fame in pop culture, appearing in shows like “Seinfeld” (in a comedic mix-up) and “The Office” (as a quirky motivational prop). In 2018, Nestlé sold the brand to Ferrero SpA for $2.8 billion, and Ferrero continues to produce it today. Though not a top-tier candy, the 100 Grand Bar remains a nostalgic favorite, cherished for its distinctive taste and texture.
